Description: *TOP 1% RARE GENDAITO* WWII Japanese Samurai Sword SHIN GUNTO World War 2 KATANA Description: I BUY SWORDS AND WHOLE COLLECTIONS! CONTACT US with any questions! 804 23 9 549 0 Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original hand-made Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. The blade represents the opportunity to own an exceptional custom-ordered gendaito katana by the famous WW2 swordsmith Komiya Shiro Kunimitsu in high end Shin Gunto mounts, and featuring a rare patriotic inscription as well as the name of the officer. The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length of 26.25 inches (67cm). It shows a well-grained and tight ko-itame hada. The hamon is an active Rai-style ko-gunome hamon that is based on suguha. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a maru boshi. The hamon features very fine actvities like ko-ashi and nie hotsure in and along the hamon. The blade is dated Showa Jyu Hachi Nen San Gatsu Kichi Jitsu, or a lucky day in March 1943, and then signed Chikugo no Kuni Junin Komiya Shiro Kunimitsu Saku Kore in a well-chiseled script. This is the full signature of Komiya Shiro Kunimitsu, a well-known swordsmith in Fukuoka during the war who became famous after the war, winning many awards for his swords’ sharpness. He founded a school that continues to make swords today. The full signature indicates this was a top work and custom ordered. The blade also features a rare inscription: Chuko Haja Kensho Tame Sato Yasushige. The inscription begins with the two kanji ‘Chuko’, which translates to ‘loyalty and familial piety’, a Confucian concept that emphasizes the importance of family and social order. The Imperial Japanese Government promoted filial piety in conjunction with loyalty to the Emperor as head of the nation, conceptualized as a large family. The inscription continues ‘Haja Kensho’, which translates to ‘defeat evil and proliferate righteousness’. The inscription completes ‘Tame Sato Yasushige’ which translates to ‘for Sato Yasushige’, the officer who ordered the sword. The mountings are high end Type 98 Shin Gunto and in Near MINT condition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is a small amount of fraying. The tsuba is classic WW2 with a complete set of eight accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is green painted metal. The metal saya shows a couple small dents and just a few very small spots of missing finish, retaining roughly 94-96% original finish. The locking mechanism is present. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, very little to no rust, and just some small scratches along the blades length. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given the high-quality craftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, outstanding condition, and exceptionally rare custom order inscription, I highly recommend this piece to a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
