The front flap text begins with this preview: "The tenderness and charm of "Little Lord Fauntleroy," the imagination and power of "The Dawn of a Tomorrow" and the gift of dramatic suspense displayed in "The Shuttle" -- all the qualities which have made Mrs. Burnett the most beloved American story-teller are present in "The Secret Garden," intensified and enriched." Very good condition. Front end paper has two gift inscriptions (one dated "Jan. 1, 1912" below it, a second dated "Christmas 1950" from the original giftee, passing the book to a new generation). No other markings noted. Toning to end papers & pastedowns; mild even toning to pages. Scattered foxing & smudges to page margins. A 1-1/2 inch tear to top edge of p. 157/158, & short tears to edges of pp. 7/8 & 183/184. Soiling to edges of page block. Binding firm & square. Dust jacket consists of front panel & front flap only, & they are detached from one another. Front panel has brown paper backing along inverse of left side; wear & creasing around edges & at corners. Front flap is chipped at top with several short tears around edges. DJ comes protected by new, archival cover. An attractive & desirable copy of the first American edition, with the front cover illustration of a little girl unlocking a small door in an ivy covered wall. Original dust jackets (even partial ones) are rare. A great addition to your collection or as a gift. Ships well-packed in a box.
