AND HERE'S JUST A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT FABULOUS "CORO" JEWELRY AND WHY WE ALL LOVE IT SO... The CORO jewelry company started doing business in 1901 as a partnership between Emanuel Cohn ("Co") and Gerald Rosenberg ("ro"). CORO was the largest of all costume jewelry manufacturers, and used a variety of jewelry marks. The top of the line was Coro Craft (or“Corocraft”) with included the famous Pegasus emblem. In later years, “Vendome” would become CORO’S high-end line, competing with some of the most famous jewelry manufacturers of the time. Much of CORO’s early success was attributed to design director Adolph Katz, who created CORO’s famous “en tremblant” pins, which featured tiny metal springs that allowed the pins to vibrate or tremble as the wearer moved. “Duettes”, made from 1931-1950’s, became among the most collectible CORO pieces. Duettes used a frame based on Cartier’s 1927 design; the CORO version had two openings in it, one for each pin. Pins were attached to the frame and worn as a set, or detached to be worn individually. Duette designs ranged from monochromatic Art Deco style to pave-rhinestone owls, crowned cherubs, horse heads, Indians. Though their popularity ebbed in the 1950s, today a vintage CORO Duette, particularly one that trembles, is highly prized by collectors. Other famous CORO designs included door knocker and crown pins. Corocraft was the next step up in quality, price, and prestige. The Corocraft brand introduced a line of Jelly Belly pins similar to Trifari’s design. Whereas most vintage CORO pieces were built on metal frames, vintage Corocraft pins and bracelets were often made of sterling silver or plated in gold.Coro Craft ads for its rhinestone pieces during the late 1940s refer to these as "Diadem Jewels" to give its line of cut glass the illusion of royal lineage and status.Vendome, which was introduced in 1944 and replaced Corocraft in 1953, then became the top of the CORO line. This was serious, simulated bling, featuring rhinestone-studded chokers, cabochon-festooned silver-plated bangles, and, by the 1960s, a set of six gold-plated pins designed by Vendome’s Helen Marion, who was inspired by the work of the great Cubist artist Georges Braque. Vendome, like CORO, also used Lucite, shaving and forming it into organic shapes in unexpected colors. CORO went out of business in 1979 after 80 years of making costume jewelry....the end of a great era.
