In bronze gilt Maltese Cross with blue enameling and white borders, featuring a fleur-de-lis in each quadrant, with a yellow and blue enameled obverse centre exhibiting a superposed handmade figure of Virgin Mary also in bronze gilt, the reverse depicting the cypher of Charles III of Spain surrounded by a blue enameled border inscribed by the Latin inscription VIRTUTI ET MERITO (Virtue and Merit), suspended by an ornamented unusual laurel wreath also in bronze gilt, with decorative loop suspension, measuring 48.82 mm (w) x 82.52 mm (h - inclusive of integral half ring), presenting minor toned bronze, extremely fine.Footnote: The Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III was founded by King Carlos III/Charles III in 1771, and it was confirmed by Pope Clement XIV on February 21, 1772. It was established as commemoration of the birth of his first grandson, Carlos V/Charles V, future heir of the Spanish throne. Originally, the Order was awarded to individuals who had displayed actions that enhanced the prestige and goals of the Spanish crown. Currently, the Order is conferred upon Spanish and foreign citizens for extremely meritorious domestic and foreign service to Spain. Since its founding, it has been considered the most prestigious civil order within Spain. This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960.
