Description: I am a backyard gardener who is just trying to find good hands for my plants due to a very limited space I have. I do not use chemical herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers. I planted red currant 15+years ago because the translucent red berries are packed with vitamin C - 100 g of berries contain 50% of the daily value, plus their distinctive delicious taste. It's hard to overlook the contribution of Red Currant bush into the landscape: addition of different interesting shape large fresh green leaves, overall it is an aesthetically pleasing very well dressed bush. Currant bushes can grow up to 3-6 feet wide and tall, and can range from red, white, or pink, to black. Also leaves can be dried and used to brew tea. As to the Berries-we eat them fresh, make jam, freeze them to use in drinks later, use fresh or frozen in baking, add while roasting poultry or meat. Red currant berries freeze very well! To enjoy eating them fresh, I wait till they are completely ripe, then they are at their sweetest. Happy to share: a pair of the 2-3 year red currants with you, size 15-17" tall, each plant has one small cluster of berries;one 3-4 year old plant , size 30"+ tall, a number of berry clusters attached; one 5-7 year old plant , size 38"tall( 3+ feet tall), good number of fruiting branches, beloved by birds at this time of the year. The pictures above show 1 plant transplanted from the garden soil and growing in the pot at this time, approximately 24" tall and another one still in the ground 17" tall. The plant is going to be taken out of the pot, wrapped in moist materials. At the arrival of the package you might find some of the leaves are wilting or dropped which is a completely predictable result of a transporting stress the plant has experienced. Plant it at least in the pot as soon as possible, give it water, air and light-set it outside, water regularly until ready to plant in the garden. The position in the garden Red currant grow best in locations that receive morning sun and afternoon shade, or dappled shade part of the day. The best planting soil-rich soil with the compost dug in, for the young seedling the amount of compost should be moderate. Fertilization All, that red currant needs, is an addition of compost in the fall (September would be perfect). Fertilize in the fall by spreading 1" layer of composted manure over the root zones of the plant. Also, mulch it to keep the soil moist and cool during the hot days of summer. Currant is a thornless understory shrub that grows in hardiness zones 3-8. It is very cold hardy. I have marigolds (they are considered good companion plants) and several other herbs growing nearby the red currant. Actually, I have roses growing about 4 feet away, but I would not necessarily recommend them as companions to red currant due to different pH requirements. I will use expedited shipping to ship the plant immediately after ordering: the price includes the cost of shipment. For multiple orders there is a combined shipment available. Happy Gardening and thank you for visiting this listing.
