Description: THIS AUCTION FEATURES AN EARLY COTTONWOOD ROOT HOPI KATSINA. IT MAY HAVE BEEN CARVED BY ONE OF THE EARLIEST HOPI CARVERS, WILSON TAWAQUAPTEWA OF ORIABI VILLAGE , AT THIRD MESA , ARIZONA. THIS DOLL HAS ONE OF HIS SIGNATURE ROWS OF BL/WH DOT DESIGN ELEMENTS-SEE PICTURES. WILSON WAS KIKMONBWI (CHIEF) OF ORIABI VILLAGE. SINCE HE WAS A RELIGIOUS LEADER, HE FELT UNCOMFORTABLE SELLING AUTHENTIC KATSINA DOLLS TO TOURISTS, SO HE MADE SLIGHT CHANGES TO THE CARVINGS. TOURISTS WERE APPARENTLY UNAWARE OF THIS DECEPTION. THIS RARE KATSINA DOLL STANDS APPROX 6 1/2" TALL, AND HAS BEEN PRIVATELY HELD IN THE SAME FAMILY UNTIL NOW. THE ORIGINAL OWNER TAUGHT AT THE OLD INDIAN SCHOOL IN PHOENIX, YEARS AGO. THIS IS A MARKET FRESH ESTATE PIECE THAT IS FULL OF HAND PAINTED DETAIL- PLEASE VIEW PICTURES FOR A FULL VISUAL DESCRIPTION. ITS LEFT FOOT HAS A DECADES OLD REPAIR TO ITS TIP-SEE PICTURES.
