A P Martial (French 1827-1883), L'Illustration Nouvelle, April 1868, Published by Cadart & Luce, Paris sheet 19 x 12 inches, laid paper with partial Arches watermark Alfred Cadart: Etcher and publisher and printer of etchings. Originally railway official; married Célonie Sophie, sister of Chifflart, in 1855 which introduced him to the world of art. Began publishing prints in 1859, gradually moving from engraving to etching. Founded Société des Aquafortistes in 1861, and journal 'L'Illustration Nouvelle' in 1868. In partnership with Félix Chevalier (1861-3); then with Jules Luquet (1863-7); this was dissolved in October 1867, and a new partnership was formed (1867-1870/1) with Léandre Luce, who had been his business assistant for six or more years. After the Franco-Prussian War, Cadart resumed dealing in his own sole name again. After his death in 1875 the firm was continued by his widow, but it was declared bankrupt in 1882 and the stock auctioned. 7 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches, laid paper with no watermark
