Illustrated throughout with four wood engraved plates in total (complete as issued). Publisher's 8 pp. catalog at rear. One of the seminal works of 19th century American fiction, found here in poor condition. A very heavily worn book- cloth faded and stained with edge wear/ loss, rear cover detached, book is shaken and loose within the cloth binding, cocked, tears across cloth spine with old repairs, lower corner loss to rear end paper, etc. Just read until it fell apart, and then somewhat repaired but overall remaining a much loved example which shows the love. First Edition, first & second state, with mixed points. The key points being the note on pg. iv about a uniform volume and the 2 pages within the rear ad section corresponding with their respective points about number of listings (4) and title heading. Publisher's cloth binding, gilt title lettering. Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Binding heavily age worn and shaken but still appealing. Cloth covers well rubbed, edge worn with cloth fraying at tips and extremities, loss of cloth at spine ends, creasing down spine, book is "cocked", scattered small staining and spotting to text block, some pages loose, etc. Clearly a well and heavily used book, but essentially complete, unsophisticated and in the original binding. Book displays a unique age patina, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive. Please review photos for our detailed attempt to present this book as it actually survives.
