Description: Jason Pettus Rare Books Chicago USA | Est. 2011 History and Rhymes of the Lost Battalion By LC “Buck Private” McCollum Published 1929 / Unknown edition Description: A strange and delightful relic from between the World Wars. The 308 Battalion of the US 77th Division managed to survive five days behind enemy lines with no food or water during WW1, which made them national heroes when returning home, with their leader Charles W. Whittlesey selected as one of the pallbearers of the original Unknown Soldier Memorial in Arlington. It was two years later that one of his soldiers, LC "Buck Private" McCollum, wrote an ode to this battalion and their commander; but when Whittlesey committed PTSD-influenced suicide in 1921, this book became a favored handout of Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, and started being reprinted in the millions. This undated copy is listed in the "600,000" printing range, and originated from Herbert D. Ryman (as is attested in the glued-in bookplate), from VFW Post #99 in Decatur, Illinois. Condition: Good Minus (G-). Folds in front soft cover, many chips along all edges, tear in the crease of the front fold-out panoramic photo of the battalion. Spine and back cover have become partially loose. Provenance: Donated by the Stark Family of Hyde Park, Chicago, associated with the local Unitarian Church and their famed choir, to an arts organization called the Southside Hub of Production (SHOP) in October 2011. Acquired on the same day.
