Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Raymond Carver's "Where I'm Calling From: New and Selected Stories," a Limited edition. Illustrated by Steve Johnson, one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION series, Personally signed by RAYMOND CARVER, published in 1988. Bound in burgundy leather, the book has marbled paper end leaves, acid-free paper, a satin book marker, Symth-sewn binding, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. Raymond Carver, who lived from 1938-1988, was born in Oregon but grew up in Yakima, Washington, where he married and had fathered two children by age twenty. Carver pumped gas, swept hospital corridors and floors, swabbed toilets, and worked other menial jobs. His stories depict characters, settings, and circumstances that remain the reader's mind with clarity and precision. He speaks of ordinary people, deserted wives, of drunks and seedy characters, their jobs, the cars, the homes, the laughter. Carver did his undergraduate work at Humboldt State University and did graduate work at the University of Iowa. He taught at Goddard College, U of Texas--El Paso, University of California---Berkeley and at Iowa. Carver was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1979 and was twice awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Stories include: "Nobody Said Anything," "Bicycles, Muscles, Cigarettes," "The Student's Wife," "They're Not Your Husband," "What Do You Do in San Francisco,?" "Fat," "What's in Alaska," "Neighbors," "Collectors," "Why, Honey?," "Gazebo," "Are These Actual Miles,?"
