Description: Renowned South African statesman, military leader and philosopher Field Marshal Jan Smuts signed original photograph. 6 X 8 original studio photograph is blind stamped by the original Cape Town photographer picturing Smuts in uniform. Smuts (1870-1950) played a key role in the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910 helping shape its constitution and with Botha who would become the union’s first prime minister, established the South African Party. Smuts played a key role leading several military campaigns and played a leading role in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 advocating for the League of Nations. He succeeded Botha to become South Africa’s second Prime Minister (1939-1948). Mounted on 8.5 X 11 backing. Exhibits a couple of light horizontal creases. Very good condition.
