Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Eliza Martha Thomas aged 12 - 1813. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central trio of carnations with a bird in flight and floral motif to each side and two birds, both in a floral swag beneath who have a bird in flight beside them. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following verse underlined with a floral border Virtue is the chiefest beauty of the mindThe noblest ornament of human kindVirtue is our safeguard and our guiding starThat stirs up reason when our senses err The lower section of the linen is stitched with an expanse of grass with a central fruit basket standing on it with a pair of butterflies above, Eliza Martha's details and the date of 1839 to its left and right followed by a tree, the left side tree with a small bush to each side and a single bush by the tree on the right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a few very small areas of damage to the lower section. One is just about able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, clean backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within an early 20th century dark wood frame with integral gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is a small old loss to the upper right outer corner and a larger one approximately two inches long to the lower right bottom edge. Measures 12 1/2" x 15 1/2" (sight size) and 14 3/4" x 17 1/2" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
