Description: Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Tomlinson aged 8 - 1813. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Sarah was just eight years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with the following verse beneath Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first efforts of an infants handAnd while her fingers on the canvas moveEngage her tender mind to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her have a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heart The middle section of the linen is stitched with an expanse of grass with a tree standing at the centre with a smaller tree and gatehouse/folly building to its left and right, whilst Sarah's details and the date of 1813 are contained within the linen below. These have a fruit basket to both sides then this section of stitching is underlined with a deep floral border which has a diamond border below. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with an old repair above the word PERMIT in the verse, a smaller one above the word THYSELF, another to the right of the left side building and another small repair to the left of the word WROUGHT in the lower section. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within an early 19th century water gilded frame which is in fair to good condition with age related rubbing plus several chips and losses which can hopefully be seen in the penultimate photo. Measures 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" (sight size) and 12" x 17" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
