Celebrate Australia! Heard Island and the McDonald Islands Heard Island and the McDonald Islands (often abbreviated as HIMI) are an Australian external territory and volcanic group of barren Antarctic islands, about two-thirds of the way from Madagascar to Antarctica, approximately 2550 miles southwest of Perth, 2390 miles southwest of Cape Leeuwin, Australia, 2610 miles southeast of South Africa, 2380 miles southeast of Madagascar, 1010 miles north of Antarctica, and 280 miles southeast of Kerguelen Island. They are located in the Great Southern Ocean according to the Australian definition but not according to the International Hydrographic Organization definition. Discovered in the mid-19th century, Heard Island and the McDonald Islands have been territories of Australia since 1947 and contain the only two active volcanoes in Australian territory, one of which, Mawson Peak, is the highest Australian mountain. The group's overall size is 141 square miles (372 square kilometers in area and it has 63 miles of coastline. The islands are uninhabited, and were selected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. They are among the most remote places on earth. The islands are part of the Southern Indian Ocean Islands tundra ecoregion that includes several subantarctic islands. In this cold climate plant life is mainly limited to grasses, mosses and lichens. The main indigenous animals are insects along with large populations of ocean-going seabirds, seals and penguins, including the Macaroni Penguin. The Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) is a species of penguin found from the Subantarctic to the Antarctic Peninsula. One of six species of crested penguin, it is very closely related to the Royal Penguin, and some authorities consider the two to be a single species. It bears a distinctive yellow crest, and the face and upper parts are black and sharply delineated from the white underparts. Adults weigh on average 12 pounds (5.5 kg) and measure about 28 inches (70 cm) in length. The male and female are similar in appearance although the male is slightly larger with a relatively larger bill. Like all penguins, they are flightless, with a streamlined body and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine lifestyle. The coin’s obverse depicts a full-color image the rugged landscape of Heard Island, including Mount Mawson volcano and the Big Ben Massif in the background. The design includes a number of crested Macaroni Penguins, one of several species of this flightless bird that breed there.
