For more than four decades. Carl and hisband, the Rambling Mountaineers, have made noteworthy contributions to theold-time, country, and bluegrass idioms. However, the best group of musiciansthat Carl recorded with are probably those working with him on this album:the Brewster Brothers (Willie and Bud), Tater Tate, and Claude Boone.Bom in North Carolina in 1916, Carl Moore Story began to play on localradio stations in the middle thirties and has been at it ever since. Carl workedfor many years in such important locations as WWNC Asheville and WNOXKnoxville. He made numerous recordings on such record labels as Mercury,Columbia, and Starday. For a time, he worked as a fiddler with Bill Monroe’sBlue Grass Boys on WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. The Brewster Brothers came from Loudon County, Tennessee, and werethree in number—Ray, Willie G., and Bud. Ray the eldest brother was born in1922, Will G1 in 1924, and Franklin (Bud) in 1937. Ray and Willie started playingwith the Bailey Brothers in Knoxville and later moved on to WSM. Ray died in1948, but the Brothers reformed in 1953 with Bud as part of the new duo. Theyworked for many years on Cas Walker shows on Knoxville radio and televisionas well as with Caro Story’s Rambling Mountaineers. They recorded dozens ofsongs with Carl between 1956 and the late sixties on several labels. TheBrewsters recorded with their own group on the Acme and Janet labels. Williehas now dropped out of music but Bud currently works with the Pinnacle Boys.Claude Boone also worked for many years with the Rambling Mountaineersand on the Cas Walker Show. In earlier yeas, Claude worked with Cliff Carlisleand in the late forties recorded as a solo artist on Mercury. He currently workson the Cas Walker Show.Fiddler Clarence “Tater” Tate is a veteran sideman of three decadesexperience. Over the years, the Gate City, Virginian has been a sideman andrecorded with such artists as Carl Butler, Carl Sauceman, Jimmy Martin, HyloBrown, Lee Moore, the Bailey Brothers, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, the ShenandoahCutups, and currently Lester Flatt.Carl originally recorded these numbers in the mid-sixties on the Rimrocklabel. At the time he was between Starday contracts. The title song is thewell-known “My Lord Keeps a Record.” Carl has waxed this song severaltimes, but this is one of the best cuts. “Will There Be a Traffic Light” is aMac McCarty song Carl originally did on Mercury in the late forties. Some of theother songs have been seldom heard like “Shadow of Death” and “Last ReunionDay.” Overall, the songs constitute a pleasing set from what one might callthe classic period of Carl Story and the Brewster Brothers.Ivan M.
