The fruit retain the moderately tart flavor of currants but the added sweetness makes the berries good for fresh eating, where most other currant varieties are mostly used for cooking or preserves. The fruit are produced on old wood so any pruning should be done in the summer so as not to cut away flower buds for the following season. The fruit are often hidden under the leaves which helps prevent birds from eating the berries too quickly, but for commercial harvesting the plants should be covered in bird netting. The flowers in the spring are also quite attractive to a large number of pollinators and their timing provides an important source of nectar at a time when few other plants are blooming. Shipping Information Your plants are wrapped in bundles in plastic bags and strapped in place in their shipping boxes and are mailed using either USPS or UPS. Most states require that all the soil be washed away from the roots for field grown plants which also gives us the opportunity to trim the roots into good form. The tops are pruned as needed depending on the species and size of the tree. Our handling time is 1-3 business days occasionally we skip the day before a holiday since plants will be sitting at the post office anyway.
