Description: 1921 W516-2-1 baseball - Pep Young, Detroit Tigers - SGC 4 On the Player - Ralph Stuart “Pep” Young (1888–1965) was an MLB second baseman for the New York Yankees (1913), Detroit Tigers (1915–1921), and Philadelphia Athletics (1922). During his time with the Tigers, Young was known for his exceptional fielding abilities and on-base prowess, playing a key role in supporting Ty Cobb and other stars on a highly successful team. Unfortunately, a back injury in 1921 derailed what had been a promising career. On the Set - The 1921 W516 baseball card series is a significant early issue in the world of baseball card collecting, known for its unique hand-cut design and simple artwork that captures the spirit of early 20th-century baseball. Specifically, the 1921 W516-2-1 subset consists of 30 cards, each measuring about 1-1/2” x 2-3/8”. The fronts feature colorized portraits rendered in simple line art, framed by a thick, blank border. The player’s name and position are identified in typeset print at the card bottom. The card backs are blank. Like other cards in the "W" series, the W516-2-1 series were cards available at various outlets such as grocery or candy stores. The cards were distributed in strips that buyers or sellers had to cut. (They also could be purchased as full strips but rarely today are they found in this original condition.) Due to their hand-cut nature and fragile paper stock, W516 cards are challenging to find in high-grade condition. It is common to find cards with miscuts, irregular edges, or trimmed borders.
