Description: Original antique country landscape painting. Rural country scene featuring a " snake " or " worm " split rail wooden fence with " x " cross braces. This style of fencing was common in the Colonial American era and well into the 1800s. A rustic, traditional fence of simple design, made with wood rails laid on top of each other - no digging was required. Sometimes called a " Virginia " fence, it did not require posts or post holes and therefore was easily moved to accommodate changing field use and avoided the problem of posts rotting in soil. There's a pasture on the right of the fence and a walking path on the left side, with trees and hills in the background. Watercolor on art paper, about 4 1/4" x 5 3/4" Signed and dated at the lower-left : " D. W. Taylor , '09 " ( 1909 ) This watercolor is 113 years old. Mounted on paper by a former owner some years ago, and housed in a small wooden frame. ( the frame is modern and includes the glass) Frame size is 6 3/4" x 8 3/4" The watercolor painting is in good condition. The wooden frame has just slight surface wear. Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
