Description: There is an illustrated "vignette" title page opposite the portrait frontispiece with the general title, The Complete Works of Robert Burns, published by W.H. Appleton, but I believe this book in fact was the work published by Leavitt and Allen. This second title page with that publisher was behind the Appleton title page, and the complete title on this page is, The Complete Poetical and Prose Works of Robert Burns; with Life, Notes, and Correspondence. Authored/Edited by A. Cunningham, "...with original pieces from the Collection of Sir Egerton Brydges, Bart and ILLUSTRATIONS". There is no date of publication, but there is a Worldcat entry for a Leavitt and Allen version with this same title providing a date, "185-". There also is a version in Worldcat with the same title, with the publisher identified as Geo A. Leavitt, a date of 1869, and the same number of pages of 559. This Geo A. Leavitt version also noted 16 illustrations, and this is the same number of illustrations in this book including the frontispiece, the vignette title, and 14 other tissue protected illustrations in this book. The book has one major wear issue, and that is that the text block is cracked in the middle and will require a book repair to solidify the binding. This is shown in the last listing photo. If a buyer is willing to undertake this repair, the book will be a very nice example of an antique book with nice clean pages and nice engraved illustrations. The books have solid brown cloth boards with a nice gilt front cover illustration, and similar clean gilt spine decorations. There is moderate to heavy wear on corners and top/bottom of spine, and light edge wear. There are no interior marks, gilt page tops, endpapers not cracked. There is a cracking at the vignette title page (see listing photo), and as noted, the center text block is cracked. 559 clean and solidly bound pages, with 2-column text on pages and small text. The book will be stored and shipped wrapped in shrink to retain this condition. B38
