1800s Antique Dk Brown Wood Beads Rosary-Mini Statue/Sliding Bell/Rose Medal

Description: Circa late 1800s, this antique French rosary came from Buenos Aires, Argentina and is marked on the reverse side 'Souvenir de Mission'. This rosary is also adorned with 'mini' or tiny religious accessories, namely: a tiny statue of St. Joseph, tiny sliding bell and a tiny rose medal. The tiny sliding bell is a sliding bell that opens and close to reveal religious representations. One side of the bell reveals an image of Our Lady of Lujan that though it is tiny, it is able to depict the 'sliver of moon' at her feet. The other side of the bell depicts a clear representation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The other unusual medal is a 'rose' medal or the 'Golden Rose' representing a Papal honor and recognition given to the Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan. Our Lady of Lujan is housed in a massive church with a Gothic architecture. To understand this devotion to Our Lady of Lujan, please read 'Our Lady of Lujan'. She is the patroness of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. This antique rosary thus tells me that it may have once belonged to a religious person who is a member of a congregation who follows the way of life and values of St Joseph. In my search for religious organisations established in France, it seem to be the most prominent one is the Sisters of Joseph who have spread their missions in South America. As I came across religious organisations that established mission in Argentina, their common goal is to work, preach and take care of the poor people, especially the youth and women who needed skills and protection. There were many missions spread all over the world especially after the French Revolution. This rosary is so simple but tells of the mendicant way of life of those religious people called to their profession. This rosary also tells of its association with the Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan. In summary, this unique rosary is a one-off item, and rarely seen. This rosary has also been conditioned and cleaned to be ready for your use. Please take the time to study the details of this beautiful rosary: Crucifix: is made of silvered brass. The obverse side of the crucifix still shows the silver coating but the reverse side has been faded and thus reveals the true metal which is brass. The reverse side is also marked 'Souvenir de Mission'. The corpus is soldered to the cross. There is a slight bent on the lower part of the cross but it is best to leave it as is. Size: 3cm x 2cm Links: are double-links made of steel. This type of rosary needs maintenance help otherwise they will simply become less useful. They have been conditioned to return the flexible movement of the steel links, otherwise the whole rosary would be stiff. Old as it is, all links are complete and original. The whole rosary has now got soft movement when handled. Beads: are made of very dark brown wood beads. The colour is almost black. Pater beads are bigger round carved beads. Mater beads are plain round beads. Sizes: 8mm/7mmCenter Medal: is typical double sided heart-shape medal made of steel. It has corroded but the medal is solid. There is a carved monogram of AM (Ave Maria). The negligible corrosion will lessen as you pray on this rosary. Attachments: All attachments in perfect working condition.1) Sliding Bell: I often wonder how manufacturers were able to produce 'tiny' pieces like this. The bell slide sideways, one side reveals the image of Our Lady of Lujan, the other side of the bell portrays the Sacred Heart of Jesus. There are also etchings on the outer sides of the bell. It is most likely made of silver. The etchings are that of a series of arch windows with a cross on top. The basilica of Our Lady of Lujan has 15 bells to its name. Size: 9mm x 9mm2) Rose medal: also known as the Golden Rose. This medal is a representation of the Golden Rose, literally a rose stem made of gold, and an honor given by the Pope to the church.The Golden Rose was initially given to nations church leaders centuries before but Popes later gave it to the church. Given on the 4th Sunday of Lent, it is blessed before given, annointed with Holy Chrism and dusted with incense. Some churches could be given more than one golden rose. Size: 1cm3) Statue of St Joseph: is the foster father of Jesus and took care/protected Mary and Jesus. To us, he epitomise the head of the family, thus the patron and protector of the Church. This rosary has a devotion to Saint Joseph and most likely had connection with the mentioned minor basilica. It is possible that the previous religious owner could have been a member of a sisterhood or a fraternity. This tiny statue depicts St Joseph holding the Child Jesus in one arm and holding a stem of white lilies. St Joseph is the patron of unborn children, fathers, immigrants, workers, employment, carpenters, pilgrims, travellers, happy death and many more.
